Thanks for the note.

I have been studying barefoot running (and walking!) for years and I am slowly becoming a believer. I will post more on barefoot running soon on my new blog site America's Podiatrist--www.AmericasPodiatrist.com

Doctor, have you taken a walk around the block barefoot?

I have been running and walking barefoot for 10 weeks. The biggest thing I have noticed is that my achilles tendonitis, which has plagued me for 20 out of my 37 years of running, has all but gone away. My knees, hips and back feel great. And of course, my feet are in really good shape for the first time since I was a kid running around barefoot in south Alabama.

I have to wonder if any of the doctors commenting on the studies, articles and books coming out have even tried going barefoot. I am totally sold on it. Walking and running, even on pavement and concrete sidewalks, is better for me without shoes. My last pair of running shoes, $130 Asics, designed to help my achilles tendonitis, seemed only to exacerbate the problem.

Now the Asics sit unused, and I am using the insoles from them in a $10 pair of water shoes from Target that I wear when I need something to basically cover my feet (recently hiking in the Rockies, I found the trail too Rocky and the weather at 12,000 feet too chilly).

Maybe it's not for everyone, but I don't really believe that. I would at least recommend spending some of your day unshod---at least around your house.

Feet that sit in shoes for 18 hours a day are going to have atrophied muscles and weak bones. Can that be disputed?

Tamarack manufactures a product that prevents painful rubbing & blisters called "ENGO Patches". ENGO applies directly to the source of friction - the footwear - not your skin.

While most blister care products protect existing blisters, ENGO Patches prevent friction from causing further pain & skin damage. They provide WEEKS of worry-free protection and are 100% guaranteed. Check it out at www.GoENGO.com.

Cosmetic surgery for the foot is controversial, and generally, baring a hideous deformity, I would not likely do it. Please feel free to describe what bothers you about your foot and I might be able to comment in more detail.

Susan - Bunions are quite common but when ignored can become a problem. Like most foot problems, the earlier you treat them the better.

I was neglecting bunions in my left leg, thought it will go after some time. Untreated it caused infection and inflammation too and it became difficult to walk.

I'm not sure if you deal also with cosmetic foot surgery, but if I were to do a foot narrowing for each foot, what would be the estimated cost? Also, what would be the estimated cost of toe shortening for each toe? Thank you for taking your time in reading this
